New Edit: Lord Echo - The Creator Has A Master Plan

It's been a while since I've posted a new edit but hopefully this tune was worth the wait! Go download it now for free and, as always, support the original artist!

New Zealand's Lord Echo has been a favorite of mine since I first laid ears on him. His cover of Sister Sledge's Thinking of You has been my go-to closer on many gigs during my last two European tours and his newest album, Curiosities, as left my turntable only momentarily since it's release. His soul/jazz/disco/reggae-tinged tunes transcend genres and description. They are, quite simply, sublime and divine .... everything that good music should be.

There's not much to say about this edit, other than it is an extension of the all too brief original (itself a cover of the Leon Thomas masterpiece). Just a bit of razor work to extend it out for my own Dj use and some slight play with the vocals during the climax... and, in the beginning, I added the bells from the Leon Thomas version in a nod to the original. Enjoy!

I'm embarrassed! What else can I say after neglecting my blog for months except life on the road gets crazy. Anyways, with this past summer's European tour behind me, I can focus on other things again... like this little blog. And, damn, do I have some things to blog about! Expect stories from the tour along with a recap, info on my new 12" that just came out as part of 2 Block Radius and lot's more mixes and edits to post!

Below is a set from the first gig of this summers tour and one of my faves year in and year out, Body & Soul outside of Dublin, Ireland! This year, I had the pleasure to perform three completely different sets on all three days and in three different areas of the festival. This set is was recorded the first night as I opened the main dance tent, the Midnight Circus, ahead of James Murphy (DFA/LCD Sound System). What an honor, what a vibe and what a treat to hear these tunes on that massive Funktion One rig! BOOM!  Although it won't quite be the same, I hope you can still enjoy the tunes on your personal sound system of choice. Boogie on!

New Edit: I Thought It Was You by Herbie Hancock

Daft Punk has never been ashamed to let you know their influences, such as on "Teachers" from their Homework Lp. As the whole world sat and listened to the streaming audio of the new album over the last few days, I was right there with them. The obvious influence of collaborators Moroder and Rodgers is definitely there but there's one guy who's influence stood out that may not have been as obvious; Herbie Hancock. Herbie is one of those rare artists that evolved with the times, from his early 60's Blue Note output to the electro/hip hop stylings of "Rockit" in the early 80's. But his 1978 album, Sunlight, contained one of the best fusions of jazz, funk and disco ever committed to wax. If you enjoyed the sexy disco beats and talk box-drenched vocals of the new Daft Punk Lp, who should definitely dig this track edited here, "I Thought It Was You". Listen and enjoy the free download! Shout out to Severino from Horse Meat Disco for reminding me of this gem!

Deep & Dusted 18 Now Live On The Downlow Radio!

I'm excited to let you all know that episode 18 of my Deep & Dusted show is now live on London's home of quality underground dance music, The Downlow Radio! I'm also a little chuffed to get top mention in this month's Downlow Radio news letter (posted above). Considering that some of my favorite djs, such as Maurice Fulton and the guys from Horsemeat Disco, also have shows on The Downlow, I consider it a real honor. And, um, apparently they consider me "oh-so handsome". Thanks, guys ;)

This episode was recorded live in Rio de Janeiro during carnival at the infamous Alto Vidigal, the premier venue for dancing to underground house and disco under the stars! What a night it was! This is the second half of my set that night and features more of a house sound than you might be used to on Deep & Dusted. But the disco influence is still in there!

Enjoy! xo-->tee...

I'll be playing some tunes tonight (March 14) down at the Gringo Cafe in Ipanema so I thought I'd offer up a free download of a new remix of mine to help set the mood!

A remix of the future classic, Cartão Postal (Post Card in English), by the amazing Soul Jazz Orchestra from their new album Solidarity out now on Strut! The Sine Qua Non Só Alegria (Only Happiness) remix extends the original and punches it up for the dance floor, adding some serious disco percussion to drive the track as well as some tamborim drumming to spice things up even more. If you enjoy the remix, please take the time to check out the original as well as the rest of the new album by Soul Jazz Orchestra!

Hope to see you tonight, starting at 7pm, at Gringo Cafe for some post-praia disco, deep & house and funk vibrations!

I finally got around to uploading my set from the epic RUN VDG carnaval party at Alto Vidigal here in Rio de Janeiro! This is one of my favorite places to play in the whole world...the vibe, the people and that VIEW! When the sun comes up over the Atlantic ocean, spilling it's purple and orange hues over Leblon and Ipanema beach, there is no better place to be in the world!

The set features deep, blissed-out house vibes....some more spacey, some more chunky, swirling melodies, pianos and even some pretty vocals. Enjoy the set and spread the music, spread the love!

*UPDATE* you can now download the whole set here!

New Sine Qua Non Edit: "Bring It Here" - Wild Sugar

I just posted on my Soundcloud a new edit I've finished and I'm really happy with the way it came out! It's available now to you all as a free download as of right now!

"Bring It Here" was a hot slice of modern funk/boogie off the mighty underground label, TSOB (The Sound of Brooklyn) by Wild Sugar released in 1980. It was produced by Bill Curtis and Gerry Thomas and featured the vocals of Janice Christie, Linda Blakely and Robin Dunn. While it's a proper tune in it's own right, it will forever be known (or at least recognized) as the source of the horn sample on the Beastie Boys track, "Brass Monkey".

For this edit, I removed those funky horns from the intro (the only place they appear in the original) and reintroduced them into the track part way through, using the break down to create the new intro. When the horns do come back in, they emerge over the vocals in a slightly edited way. Dubbed out vocals, lot's of slicing, a bit of filtering, a bit of tape delay and some added drum programming complete the edit. Enjoy!

As always, if you dig the edit, do yourself and the artist a favor and check out the original!

New Edit Available For Free Download: Time Will Tell

1/29/2012

Super excited about this one! I finally tracked down a copy of one of my favorite disco funk tunes and just finished an extended edit, taking it form the original 7" mix into a proper dance floor version.
From Soundcloud: "Ice was formed in 1970 in Long Island, New York. Soon after the band would relocate to Paris, France and change their name to Lafayette Afro Rock Band, as they are best known. Their sound was a potent blend of funk breaks, disco flourishes and afro themes woven into a thick tapestry of sound. This rare b-side single by them (and my personal favorite), Time Will Tell, is extended here from the original 7" mix into something resembling a full 12" mix with dj friendly intro and outro. If this track doesn't make you wanna dance, check your pulse ;) "

New Merlin Edit: There but for the Grace of God (Free Download)

This new edit from my man, Merlin, showed up in my soundcloud inbox the other day and I found it worthy of sharing with you all.

Merlin has made his name in the hip hop world but his deep crates and eclectic taste transcends simple genre classifications. I think this is one reason we get along so well. It certainly has nothing to do with how we treat each other after a few drinks. But I digress.

Merlin's re-rub of this 1979 hit by Machine slows the tempo down a bit while punching it up with some extra percussion programming, adding some spice to the masala. And like all things spicy, this will make you sweat. Download, enjoy and stop by his soundcloud page and show some love.

ps - sorry again, bud,  about your nose last time i was in nyc ;)

There but for the Grace of God (Merlin's Re-Rub) by merlinthewiz

*update 1:51pm: I just came across a new remix by Merlin of NYC-based singer/songwriter, Matthew Belle's new track, "Oh My Stars". With the help of Matt Brandau on bass & keys, Merlin has transformed this mellow singer/song writer tune into something a little more special.
