Fans of vinyl and true school hip hop should be happy tonight in Copacabana. Vinyl United is bringing those two great tastes that taste great together to Fosfobox, featuring carioca hiphop dj legends Pachu, Saci, Lulinha, Saddam and special guest Bruno Vinelli.

In the upstairs Fosfobar, it's all about the Botafogo Social Club as Mike Frugaletti and I go back to back all night playing whatever we feel like. I'm still not quite sure what that will be but I do know it will be FUNKY!

Daft Punk has never been ashamed to let you know their influences, such as on "Teachers" from their Homework Lp. As the whole world sat and listened to the streaming audio of the new album over the last few days, I was right there with them. The obvious influence of collaborators Moroder and Rodgers is definitely there but there's one guy who's influence stood out that may not have been as obvious; Herbie Hancock. Herbie is one of those rare artists that evolved with the times, from his early 60's Blue Note output to the electro/hip hop stylings of "Rockit" in the early 80's. But his 1978 album, Sunlight, contained one of the best fusions of jazz, funk and disco ever committed to wax. If you enjoyed the sexy disco beats and talk box-drenched vocals of the new Daft Punk Lp, who should definitely dig this track edited here, "I Thought It Was You". Listen and enjoy the free download! Tomorrow night at Mekong in Leblon, The Rio Times presents an event the first of it's kind in Rio de Janeiro, Rio DJ MixUp. It will be an opportunity for all those in the nightlife community to come together, share a drink and make some connections. I'll be representing Botafogo Social Club and, along with Mary Byker, we'll be playing the tunes for the evening. Things get started at 7PM so come right down after work! There's no charge to hang out and Mekong will be running drink specials all night!

I've always been a huge fan of Massive Attack, including everything Tricky did with them. I have to say though, I haven't been as excited about a release of his since those days. The new album looks to be amazing and the new single is heavy! My remix takes from the track from it's mid 80 BPM trip hop origin into the land of "dark disco dub". Hope you enjoy it! And, of course, do yourself and the artist a favor and check out the original and the rest of the new album (when it drops)!

I'm excited to let you all know that episode 18 of my Deep & Dusted show is now live on London's home of quality underground dance music, The Downlow Radio! I'm also a little chuffed to get top mention in this month's Downlow Radio news letter (posted above). Considering that some of my favorite djs, such as Maurice Fulton and the guys from Horsemeat Disco, also have shows on The Downlow, I consider it a real honor. And, um, apparently they consider me "oh-so handsome". Thanks, guys ;)

This episode was recorded live in Rio de Janeiro during carnival at the infamous Alto Vidigal, the premier venue for dancing to underground house and disco under the stars! What a night it was! This is the second half of my set that night and features more of a house sound than you might be used to on Deep & Dusted. But the disco influence is still in there!

I couldn't be more hyped for tomorrow nights gig at the Ya'Ya High-Fi party going down at Studio RJ! Not only does April 2 mark the five year anniversary of me first coming to Rio, it will also be my birthday at midnight! On top of all that, I get to play with my Botafogo Social Club soul brother, Dan Markham aka DJ Dementia. The last time we shared the decks was last summer in London at the Notting Hill Arts Club and I think we're both equally looking forward to the reunion. The music will funky, funky, funky and the medium will be a some dusty stacks of hand-selected 45"s that I've brought from the States for the occasion and Mr. Markham has hauled all the way from the UK just for the night! All this, of course, is leading up to our massive four year BSC anniversary party going down April 13 at Alto Vidigal. The next couple of weeks here in Rio are looking to be even hotter than usual!

For the still uninitiated, Ya'Ya High-Fi is the brain-child of DJ Marcelinho da Lua, a rare vinyl don and one of the prime movers and shakers of Brazil's early drum & bass scene (as evidenced by this clip from 2003). The night is one of the very few in Rio purely dedicated to the cult of vinyl and the music selection is top shelf! Along with Dalua, my man Montano lays down the visual component to the night, along with some grooves of his own.

Functioning primarily as a live jazz venue, the sound system in Studio RJ and clean and it bumps! So forget the fact that it's Tuesday night, dust off your boogie shoes and come have a drink with me and Dementia as we throw down the heat!

It is with a heavy heart I write this today, having woke up this morning to find an email from a dear friend in San Francisco informing me of Scott's passing.

Where it not for the music of Scott Hardkiss and is soul brothers, Robbie and Gavin, I may never have moved to San Francisco and I have no doubt my life would be vey different.

Like many young ravers growing up on the East Coat in the early 90's, the music of the Hardkiss Brothers touched me on a profound level. Whenever they came to town, we were there, knowing in our hearts the night would be magical. His early works under the name God Within,  "Rain Cry" and "The Poenix", helped provide the soundtrack to our halcyon days and nights.

Long before the viral power of the internet, there were rumors circulating of this unreleased remix of almost mythical proportions; the Hardkiss Remix of Elton John's "Rocket Man". When I finally heard it played by Scott at a rave held in an abandoned North Carolina church around five in the morning with the sun streaming through the stained glass window's, it truly felt like a religious experience, impossible to really explain unless you were there. Years later, I would find myself in the Hardkiss office in San Francisco holding a copy of the original DAT tape of that remix. But that would happen later.

For me and many I knew, the psychedelic house sounds of the Hardkiss Brothers defined what we knew to be happening on the other side of the country during those years and I longed to be a part of it. We played, studied and cherished those early records as if they were audio dispatches from a different, more beautiful planet. I can honestly say the album, "Delusions of Grandeur", changed my life.

I first met Scott personally at a party he played at the Millennium Center in Greensboro, North Carolina around 1995. I was 18 or 19 years old and found myself upstairs in the artist dressing rooms, face to face with someone I idolized. I remember his kindness as we spoke and his willingness to record a promo spot for my college radio show. After the party ended, I replayed that casette tape the whole way home, listening to the words on it… "Shalom. This is Scott Hardkiss from San Francisco, California and you are listening to Future Listening with Tee Cardaci."

Through that radio show, I forged a relationship with Niven Bonar, the label head at Hardkiss and close friend of the boys. I eagerly awaited the newest promos he would send me from the West Coast and,  when a package arrived one day containing a stack of their newest single, "Acid Funk", I was ecstatic. I brought them out to our Fresh party that week, happily distributing copies to friends, and playing every mix on the record at our party that night. I also looked forward to our conversations where I would report back to him with my feedback and which songs I was charting that week. But mostly I looked forward to these conversations because it was small chance to learn more about what was going on out in San Francisco in those heady days. I'll always remember the one conversation we had in 1996 that ended with an offer to come to San Francisco to intern for their label. Their was no money involved but that hardly mattered. I had been given the opportunity, or at least a good excuse to tell my parents, to move to San Francisco were I hoped to learn from those guys whose music so inspired me. A couple months later I would be on the other side of the country, having a drink with Scott and the boys, celebrating Gavin's bachelor party in Scott's San Francisco loft. It was all so surreal to me.

Although I never had the chance to know Scott as well as I would get to know Robbie,  Gavin and the other Hardkiss family members; Niven, Wade, Charlotte and the band of merry pranksters that staffed their office, his influence on the path my life took after hearing his music was immeasurable and I am forever grateful.

It is with great sadness but eternal love that I send out my deepest condolences today to all in the extended Hardiss and Sunburn family and to all who new Scott or were touched by his music. Let us celebrate the fact that we had him in our lives and let his spirit live on through his music. Rest in peace, mate, and thank you for all the light you helped let into my life.
