The music world lost a legend of the funk and disco sound the other day. Jimmy Castor passed away at the age of 71. The mainstream listening public may remember him as the creator of 'novelty' or 'party' records, such as "Big But Bertha" but b-boys, djs, producers and crate diggers know the real worth of this man's contribution to the world. His 1972 album, "it's Just Begun", with his then newly formed Jimmy Castor Bunch produced at least two tracks that will live on far longer than their creator. The title track, with its epic drum breaks and Jimmy's urgent sax, still has the power to launch a thousand b-boys onto the dance floor whenever it's dropped some 40 years after it's original release. And it's impossible to even count the number of times the vocal intro to his tune 'Troglodyte' has been appropriated by djs and producers. You know the one... the one proclaiming, "What we gonna do right here is go back. Way back. Back into time!" Yeah, that one! Thank you for all the funky good times, Mr. Castor. We all owe you one. Featured below is my tribute edit to Jimmy Castor, of one of my favorite disco funk tunes of his, "E-Man Par-Tay". Download it, groove to it, love it and let his funk live on!

I've just returned from a great month out on the West Coast, visiting old friends and playing some really fun gigs. I also had the time to work on some new edits as well as a chance to get back in the studio with my man, Schnezzy from 2 Block Radius. For now have a listen to and feel free to download my new edit of 'Tonight You & Me' by the disco diva, Phyllis Hyman. This one is guaranteed to bump!
My man, JP Soul from San Francisco, has just posted this hot boogie edit of "A Thief in the Night", available as a free download on Soundcloud for a limited time and it is hot, Hot, HOT! JP is preparing to relaunch SF's legendary Roam Recordings with limited edition vinyl releases followed up with full scale digital distribution. Past Roam releases include tracks by Hesohi, Justin Martin & Sammy D, (co-owner) Chad Mitchell, Lance Desardi as well as JP himself and future releases look just as promising. If you are in the Bay Area this Saturday (10/22), catch him, along with Mike Bee, Jason Greer and Darren Davis, at Vinyl Dreams at 222 Hyde, doing their all vinyl thang on that lovely Turbosound system. Also, if things work out right, I'll be joining JP back in the Bay on November 12th for a gig at Showdown SF! Atmospheric, psychedelic, blissd-out and deep, this one will have you heavily under the influence. Welcome to the Space Cake Disco! [ download and stream deep & dusted 14 ] [ full archive of all episodes of Deep & Dusted ] The drudgery of the work week is coming to an end and what better way to welcome the weekend than with a new edit! Here's to hoping your 5pm comes with the quickness and the boogie can begin. Pleasure was a funk and soul outfit from Portland, Oregon that had a cult following on the underground black music scene of the 70's. Their biggest hit was "Glide" but I always preferred the laid back disco groove of their track "Future Now" off the album of the same name. The electric guitar work of Marlon "The Magician" McClain gave their sound an edge not usually heard among their contemporaries but for this edit, I tried to stay true to the original vibe while removing more of the in your face guitar solos. I also tried to emphasizing the more soulful aspects of the track, extending out the slow disco grooves and beautiful backing vocals. The edit also benefits from a boost to the low end and a few subtle overdubs. "We are universal children" and this is how we get down! How about a little disco funk by the Ohio Players to get you over your mid-week hump? Here's one of their classic tunes, beefed up and reworked by Jimmy Michaels. The track is "Fire" and damn is it hot! Download this joint now while it's still available.
