The good folks at Eighty Eight DC have uploaded a recording of my set at Bump n Grind at Zeba Bar in Washington DC. You can go grab the free download off of their page now! It was a great night, sharing the decks with residents Refugee and David as well as old homie, Fil Latorre! I appreciated the opportunity to dig out some old cuts and play an all vinyl set of go-go, old school hip hop, disco, boogie and a bit of electro and house. The drinks were strong, the dance floor was dusted and the vibe was solid. Much thanks to Graham and Tatiana for hosting me and generally keeping me up way past my bed time. You can see how it all ended in the photo on the left. That's what I get for passing out first.Nothing wrong with a little monkey business though. [ Right Click and Save Set Here! ]

My old buddy from my days working for the Hardkiss and Sunburn labels, Lee Howard, hit me up recently about some remix work for a new project he was producing. Lee, the man behind Infinite Posse in the late 90's, has been living up in Portland and working with new artist, Condition White, on some forward thinking r & b tracks. Their new EP that this track is taken from, Slow Burn, is available now and definitely worth a listen! I really dug the track he sent me so Schnezzy and I went in the studio and gave it the 2 Block Radius treatment. The result is a mid tempo house number that takes elements of the original and arranges them overtop a 4/4 beat, adding some chords and filtered percussion. You can hear the original version of Honest Man here but we're giving away our remix for a limited time for free on soundcloud! Hope you enjoy. It had been a long time since I made music with my old San Francisco crew, 2 Block Radius, but after getting back together a while back, I'm very happy to announce the release of our new 12"single on Uncut Records, "Take You Back"! The heavy weight vinyl was pressed up in a limited, gold numbered edition from the pros at Furnace Manufacturing and includes artwork form The Hydrilla, a digital download code and a smoking remix from Horse Meat Disco player, Severino Panzetta! You can purchase it online in the US from Amoeba Records or from Juno Records in the UK and Europe. Here's the rundown... Severino Remix (Severino Panzetta) Skipping drums bring the swagger to Severino's take on the original, where subtle acid tweaks offset warm key stabs to create a strong groove. A clever breakdown takes things in a deeper direction, with swirling strings and some beefy 303 added in for good measure. Messing With It Mix (Schnez Late night, locked-in dancefloors will have plenty to lose themselves in with the hypnotic groove of the Messing With It mix, where a subtle percussive strut weaves its way across some sparingly deployed and downright trippy FX and that voice promising to take you back. Timeless house music. Sine Qua Non mix Launching straight in with a businesslike bassline, Tee Cardaci's mix smoothes into a more RnB-feeling break before reloading the thumping 4/4. The keys make a welcome reappearance in a call-and-answer with the bassline while a bit of Brasilian percussion percolates through, making for a multi-tiered track that keeps the interest to the end. I'm embarrassed! What else can I say after neglecting my blog for months except life on the road gets crazy. Anyways, with this past summer's European tour behind me, I can focus on other things again... like this little blog. And, damn, do I have some things to blog about! Expect stories from the tour along with a recap, info on my new 12" that just came out as part of 2 Block Radius and lot's more mixes and edits to post!
Below is a set from the first gig of this summers tour and one of my faves year in and year out, Body & Soul outside of Dublin, Ireland! This year, I had the pleasure to perform three completely different sets on all three days and in three different areas of the festival. This set is was recorded the first night as I opened the main dance tent, the Midnight Circus, ahead of James Murphy (DFA/LCD Sound System). What an honor, what a vibe and what a treat to hear these tunes on that massive Funktion One rig! BOOM! Although it won't quite be the same, I hope you can still enjoy the tunes on your personal sound system of choice. Boogie on! Firstly, I really need to write an update about Glastonbury because it was beyond epic. But for now, here I am in Berlin and things have not slowed down for a minute so that will have to wait a bit more.
For now though, it's all about tonight at Mein Haus Am See! I'm super excited to be djing back to back all night with my old San Francisco homie, JP Soul! The venue is supposed to be a very cool 24 hour bar/disco/gallery/cafe so come down, if you're in town, and let's do this! And here's my set from Glasto! I can't believe this is the first I've updated the blog since leaving Brazil but things get crazy quickly on the road.
Last weekend's gigs at Body & Soul festival were amazing! Such good vibes, amazing people and such a quality festival. It's always a highlight of my summer. My first gig there (uploaded on Mixcloud below) was opening the main dance tent ahead of James Murphy on Friday night. I got to play some really chilled tunes, some of my own stuff and a few other treats I hadn't played out before. Amazing to hear them on that HUGE Funktion One rig! Saturday night, it was all about the Radio Shack.... about 100+ dancers getting down with smiles all around! I recorded that set, which featured more on the funk side of things, and will upload when I next get a chance. Sunday was my final gig at the new My House stage. Again, crazy good vibes, happy, smiling, dancing peoples! This is why I LOVE the Irish so. And, of course, interspersed throughout the gigs were adventures, hugs and epic lulz all weekend long! Massive shout out to everyone that danced to my tunes, showed my some proper Irish hospitality (MARK!) and generally made it a weekend to remember! Most importantly, shout out to Freddie, Avril and company for doing such an amazing job! Total respect to the lot of ya! Now it's off to play the NYC Downlow at Glastonbury! xoxo->t. Fans of vinyl and true school hip hop should be happy tonight in Copacabana. Vinyl United is bringing those two great tastes that taste great together to Fosfobox, featuring carioca hiphop dj legends Pachu, Saci, Lulinha, Saddam and special guest Bruno Vinelli.
In the upstairs Fosfobar, it's all about the Botafogo Social Club as Mike Frugaletti and I go back to back all night playing whatever we feel like. I'm still not quite sure what that will be but I do know it will be FUNKY! Come out tonight and get the weekend started early! LISTA AMIGA: R$20 até 1h e R$30 após (nomes no mural do evento ou para opalao76@ig.com.br) Preço sem lista: R$40 Fosfobox Rua Siqueira Campos, 143, Copacabana Daft Punk has never been ashamed to let you know their influences, such as on "Teachers" from their Homework Lp. As the whole world sat and listened to the streaming audio of the new album over the last few days, I was right there with them. The obvious influence of collaborators Moroder and Rodgers is definitely there but there's one guy who's influence stood out that may not have been as obvious; Herbie Hancock. Herbie is one of those rare artists that evolved with the times, from his early 60's Blue Note output to the electro/hip hop stylings of "Rockit" in the early 80's. But his 1978 album, Sunlight, contained one of the best fusions of jazz, funk and disco ever committed to wax. If you enjoyed the sexy disco beats and talk box-drenched vocals of the new Daft Punk Lp, who should definitely dig this track edited here, "I Thought It Was You". Listen and enjoy the free download! Shout out to Severino from Horse Meat Disco for reminding me of this gem! Tomorrow night at Mekong in Leblon, The Rio Times presents an event the first of it's kind in Rio de Janeiro, Rio DJ MixUp. It will be an opportunity for all those in the nightlife community to come together, share a drink and make some connections. I'll be representing Botafogo Social Club and, along with Mary Byker, we'll be playing the tunes for the evening. Things get started at 7PM so come right down after work! There's no charge to hang out and Mekong will be running drink specials all night!
Rio DJ MixUp @ Mekong Rua General Urquiza 188 A (at Dias Ferreira) Leblon, RJ RSVP: facebook.com/riotimes I've always been a huge fan of Massive Attack, including everything Tricky did with them. I have to say though, I haven't been as excited about a release of his since those days. The new album looks to be amazing and the new single is heavy! My remix takes from the track from it's mid 80 BPM trip hop origin into the land of "dark disco dub". Hope you enjoy it! And, of course, do yourself and the artist a favor and check out the original and the rest of the new album (when it drops)! |
