Today marks one year since the passing of Scott Hardkiss. His memory has not faded and the impact he has had on many of us is still reverberates. In the wake of his passing, many memorials were written, including my own, and several tribute mixes were released. As the one year anniversary approached, I was contacted by a kindred spirit on the other side of the globe who was as influenced by Hardkiss as I was, although we had never actually met in person. His name was Steve "Griffo" Griffiths aka Derek Random and he hailed form the west midlands of England but was now living in Spain. We had connected at some point online over our love of quality house music and now he was asking me if I'd like to contribute to a special edition of his radio show dedicated to Scott and the legacy of Hardkiss. I told him it would be an honor and a pleasure. I contributed a one hour set that was a very personal reflection on the legacy of Hardkiss and the SF house sound they helped to inspire. It was a mixture of some older, obscure tracks by members of Hardkiss, material off the new Hardkiss album, 1991, and a selection of newer material from San Francisco artists and labels, including some of my own material (as Sine Qua Non and 2 Block Radius, with my bro Schnezzy). Steve then integrated that in between two and a half hours of his own mixing, creating something truly special in the process. When the show aired on My House Your House radio, something very cool happened. Thanks to the diligent promoting that Steve had done, an international community of family and friends (including Gavin and Robbie Hardkiss) gathered on the facebook event page to chat, comment on the music, reminisce and reconnect in real time, a true testament to the lasting legacy of Hardkiss and the family they helped build. This comment from Scott's widow, Stephanie, was particularly moving, "Thanks so much... our daughter came home from school and started dancing ... my heart lept... thanks for putting this together!". As we remember Scott today, here are some words that Gavin Hardkiss had posted to his facebook page: There are a lot of ways to lead an honorable life on Earth. You can teach kids, heal the sick, cloth the homeless, build better things or simply make other people laugh. We make music. In honor of Scott Hardkiss, who passed away 1 year ago today, fill your day with 3.5 hours of the Hardkiss sound courtesy of Derek Random and Tee Cardaci Cheers, brother. Hardkiss forever! Below is the show, archived on Mixcloud. If you would like to download the show, it is also available on Soundcloud. If you care to read what I wrote, explaining the reason for inclusion for each track I selected, you can after the break.

We finally made it to 20 episodes of Deep & Dusted on The Downlow Radio! To celebrate, I have a special live set recorded this past summer at the NYC Downlow at Glastonbury! I had the honor to play the last set of the weekend in the Downlow Radio room... epic! Check out some pics above and head over to The Downlow Radio to download my set. If you've been with me since the beginning, thanks for listening over the last 20 episodes. If you're just tuning in, go back through the archive! There's a ton of quality tunes to check out and don't forget to check out some of the other amazing shows on The Downlow Radio by some of my favorite djs!
Deep & Dusted #20 - Live at Glastonbury 2013 The good folks at Eighty Eight DC have uploaded a recording of my set at Bump n Grind at Zeba Bar in Washington DC. You can go grab the free download off of their page now! It was a great night, sharing the decks with residents Refugee and David as well as old homie, Fil Latorre! I appreciated the opportunity to dig out some old cuts and play an all vinyl set of go-go, old school hip hop, disco, boogie and a bit of electro and house. The drinks were strong, the dance floor was dusted and the vibe was solid. Much thanks to Graham and Tatiana for hosting me and generally keeping me up way past my bed time. You can see how it all ended in the photo on the left. That's what I get for passing out first.Nothing wrong with a little monkey business though. [ Right Click and Save Set Here! ] I'm embarrassed! What else can I say after neglecting my blog for months except life on the road gets crazy. Anyways, with this past summer's European tour behind me, I can focus on other things again... like this little blog. And, damn, do I have some things to blog about! Expect stories from the tour along with a recap, info on my new 12" that just came out as part of 2 Block Radius and lot's more mixes and edits to post!
Below is a set from the first gig of this summers tour and one of my faves year in and year out, Body & Soul outside of Dublin, Ireland! This year, I had the pleasure to perform three completely different sets on all three days and in three different areas of the festival. This set is was recorded the first night as I opened the main dance tent, the Midnight Circus, ahead of James Murphy (DFA/LCD Sound System). What an honor, what a vibe and what a treat to hear these tunes on that massive Funktion One rig! BOOM! Although it won't quite be the same, I hope you can still enjoy the tunes on your personal sound system of choice. Boogie on! It's Friday, the weekend's here once again and episode #19 of Deep & Dusted is now live for your listening pleasure on The Downlow Radio! Here's the description from their website: "Episode 19 of Deep & Dusted finds Tee dreaming of sandy beaches, debaucherous nights and Balearic sunrises. Here is the sound of summer approaching!" This is one of my favorite places to play in the whole world...the vibe, the people and that VIEW! When the sun comes up over the Atlantic ocean, spilling it's purple and orange hues over Leblon and Ipanema beach, there is no better place to be in the world!
The set features deep, blissed-out house vibes....some more spacey, some more chunky, swirling melodies, pianos and even some pretty vocals. Enjoy the set and spread the music, spread the love! *UPDATE* you can now download the whole set here! Hats off to Bristol's Alfresco Disco crew for putting on a stellar festa last Saturday, August 4th. It seems like Brazil has been following me on this summer's tour and the party's theme of 'Welcome to the Sambadrome' kept with that notion. Three areas of music pumped out tropical flavored house, disco, downtempo and soulful grooves all day long, provided by Bristol's top selectors. The crowd came in costume and ready to get down; good vibes all around! Much thanks to the fellas from Alfresco Disco (Frankie & Luke) for bringing me out to play. It was a pleasure! Below, you can listen to and download my first set of the night, a fairly chilled affair featuring a bit of disco, house, funk, Brazilian grooves and the odd moombahton track, including many of my own edits and remixes. To help get you in the mood, I have a new mix for you all up on mixcloud. April 17, I had the honor of opening for Rio de Janeiro superstars, Orquestra Voadora, at my favorite place in the world to hear live music, Rio's legendary Circo Voador. Also on the bill were members of the Parisian brass band mafia, Dumb & Brass and Les Fines Polettes. This night marked a major chapter in my history as a dj in Rio de Janeiro and shit was all the way LIVE! Massive thanks to everyone who came out and supported!
In honor of the headliner's roots in New Orleans music, the set features loads of down and dirty NoLa funk. It doesn't stop there though. We also get dosed with some disco, soul, jazz, afrobeat, hip hop, latin grooves and even a touch of Washington DC style GoGo music! Enjoy and hope to see you all this Saturday for the 2 year anniversary of Botafogo Social Club! I've just uploaded my set from April 19, 2012, when I played at Teatro Odesseia here in Rio de Janeiro, along side Dumb & Brass and Fines Polettes from Paris, France. This set features some epic soul, heavy funk, smoking soul jazz, latin heat, some afrobeat and a bit more. There are some seriously heavyweight tunes going on here, if I do say so myself!
You can stream the mix below via mixcloud or you can download the mix here from mediafire. Enjoy! |
