Tomorrow night at Mekong in Leblon, The Rio Times presents an event the first of it's kind in Rio de Janeiro, Rio DJ MixUp. It will be an opportunity for all those in the nightlife community to come together, share a drink and make some connections. I'll be representing Botafogo Social Club and, along with Mary Byker, we'll be playing the tunes for the evening. Things get started at 7PM so come right down after work! There's no charge to hang out and Mekong will be running drink specials all night!
Rio DJ MixUp @ Mekong Rua General Urquiza 188 A (at Dias Ferreira) Leblon, RJ RSVP: facebook.com/riotimes Break out your orange attire and get ready to suck down a few Heinekens...it's Queensday! I've been diligently digging for some quality dutch grooves that don't involve Tiesto or bad trance music (redundant?) and I think I'm ready to do this! The festivities kick off at 9pm at the Royal Tulip Hotel in São Conrado. Entry is R$39 and includes food and drink! I'll leave you with this amazing slice of rare boogie by SUMY, who immigrated to Amsterdam from Suriname. Me and my man, Dementia, circa 2010 I couldn't be more hyped for tomorrow nights gig at the Ya'Ya High-Fi party going down at Studio RJ! Not only does April 2 mark the five year anniversary of me first coming to Rio, it will also be my birthday at midnight! On top of all that, I get to play with my Botafogo Social Club soul brother, Dan Markham aka DJ Dementia. The last time we shared the decks was last summer in London at the Notting Hill Arts Club and I think we're both equally looking forward to the reunion. The music will funky, funky, funky and the medium will be a some dusty stacks of hand-selected 45"s that I've brought from the States for the occasion and Mr. Markham has hauled all the way from the UK just for the night! All this, of course, is leading up to our massive four year BSC anniversary party going down April 13 at Alto Vidigal. The next couple of weeks here in Rio are looking to be even hotter than usual! For the still uninitiated, Ya'Ya High-Fi is the brain-child of DJ Marcelinho da Lua, a rare vinyl don and one of the prime movers and shakers of Brazil's early drum & bass scene (as evidenced by this clip from 2003). The night is one of the very few in Rio purely dedicated to the cult of vinyl and the music selection is top shelf! Along with Dalua, my man Montano lays down the visual component to the night, along with some grooves of his own. Functioning primarily as a live jazz venue, the sound system in Studio RJ and clean and it bumps! So forget the fact that it's Tuesday night, dust off your boogie shoes and come have a drink with me and Dementia as we throw down the heat! April 2, 2013 Studio RJ Av. Vieira Souto, 110 - Arpoador Doors open 23h R$5 before midnight / R$10 after As part of the Wednesday Night Dj Happy Hour and to help celebrate the soft launch of Strategic Sounds Rio, I'll be playing some tunes tonight with Mr. Mary Byker, current front man of legendary 90's indie Brit band,
Pop Will Eat Itself! Come through and sample the selection of pan-asian delicacies and get yourself a Jarra of one of their delicious libations as we play the grooves to ease you over the mid-week hump! I'll be playing some tunes tonight (March 14) down at the Gringo Cafe in Ipanema so I thought I'd offer up a free download of a new remix of mine to help set the mood! A remix of the future classic, Cartão Postal (Post Card in English), by the amazing Soul Jazz Orchestra from their new album Solidarity out now on Strut! The Sine Qua Non Só Alegria (Only Happiness) remix extends the original and punches it up for the dance floor, adding some serious disco percussion to drive the track as well as some tamborim drumming to spice things up even more. If you enjoy the remix, please take the time to check out the original as well as the rest of the new album by Soul Jazz Orchestra! Hope to see you tonight, starting at 7pm, at Gringo Cafe for some post-praia disco, deep & house and funk vibrations! Gringo Cafe Barao Da Torre 240, Ipanema, BR. Tonight marks the triumphant return of the infamous RUN VDG party to top of Vidigal! Carnaval is in full swing here in Rio de Janeiro, the streets are packed with costumed revelers and the sun is blazing! But as the sun sets, giving way to the night, the party will continue and the rhythms will shift from the samba machinhas to beats of house and disco! I'll be kicking things off with some laid back tropical vibes until 1 AM. After that, I'll be handing over the reins to my Botafogo Social Club, bruvah from another mother, Mike Frugaletti. Mahara Belgrano will finish off the night, direct from Fishbone in Buzios. Check out some of her styles below and come join us later up on the hill! RSVP here for RUN VDG for discounted admission! Although I got my start djing in the Washington DC area, it was really once I went to university in North Carolina that I really got going, throwing my weekly party, Fresh. It's been a while since I had the chance to come back and I couldn't be more hyped to have four upcomming shows there, beginning tomorrow night in Charlotte! I know I still have a lot of friends in fam down in North Cackalacka and I'm excited to see a lot of you guys again! Let's boogie! Kicking things off tomorrow night (Thursday), I have the pleasure to be playing Keep It Funky at Soul Gastrolounge in Charlotte. I hear great things about this place and I'm looking forward to dropping some deep house, disco and my own productions alongside underground veteran Jay Coop! I've been trying to hook up with this cat for a while and tomorrow it's going down! If you're not familiar with the man, do yourself a favor and download his new mix on Soundcloud....solid mixing, quality track selection and lovely vibes abound. What else do you want?! On Friday night, it's all popping off at the legendary Carborro Station in Carborro, NC. My host for the evening is veteran selector and fellow DC area native, Jaesunel. I've been a fan of this guy since the day we met. His taste is impecable and funky! Expect an ass-shaking selection of funk, soul, house, disco and breaks guaranteed to loosen your caboose. I was supposed to play here a few weeks back but screwed up royally and was in San Francisco at the time. Friday night I plan to make up for it! Take a listen to this set of Jason dropping the funk at We're Bringing It back, a dope outdoor free party that he's a part of that happens every summer. Back when I was going to University in NC, one of my favorite places to play was Axis in Wilmington. Axis has long since shut it's doors bu there's a new place in town, Rx Restaurant & Bar. Co-owner, Dj and all around cool cat, Josh Novicki, is the man responsible for bringing me down and bringing the good eats and fat beats. Some of you may know him as Dj Fingerscales from NYC. Josh recently moved back to NC after years holding down residencies and throwing some of the best undergrounds in Brooklyn and beyond. Wilmington has gained a real asset in Josh and his new Restaurant/Bar. I'll be playing all night Saturday and then I'll be back again for a special Disco Brunch on Sunday morning. No rest for the wicked. Hope to see you all there! Flyer for one of my first parties in 1993, held 10 miles and 20 years from where I'll be playing tonight. I have a special gig coming up tonight on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. When my folks moved out of the Washington DC area in 1993, this is where I ended up. One of the first ever parties I produced myself was here on "The Shore", as they call it around here. The event, Disco Inferno, was ostensibly for my brothers 15th birthday but, really, any excuse for a party, right? We rented out a big space above the local Town Hall (and the town police station, as it turned out) and I lugged in my sound and lighting rig along with a dodgey old smoke machine. As the flyer advertised, I played a selection of disco and funk mixed in with the "today's best dance music" to a fairly unsuspecting crowd of teens. One slightly awkward kid took it in stride when I told him I wouldn't be playing anything from his stack of Megadeath cds he had brought for me. He just shrugged, walked out to the dance floor and proceded to do the centipede. I wish all those with inappropriate requests reacted the same as that guy. Tonight, almost 20 years later, I have the chance to come back to where it all started for me and do what I love to do.... make the party "100% Phat" ;) If you happen to be in Zurich, Switzerland tonight, I'll be djing at Bagatelle 93 on Langstrasse 93. This is a great space with a beautiful bar downstairs and dance floor and bar upstairs. They stay open late so hopefully I'll get to play a nice long set! You can check out there facebook page here.
